About

The UCLA Asian American Studies Center is publishing a series of online “Storybooks” that can be used by teachers and students to learn about the history and experiences of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Online AAPI Storybooks are free to use for educational purposes. They contain interactive learning experiences appropriate for various grade levels along with lesson plans for teachers.

Vanessa Unmuted was developed in response to the increase in attacks against Asian Americans that arose as Chinese were wrongly blamed for the COVID-19 pandemic. There were over 6,600 incidents reported to the StopAAPIHate online reporting site in the first year of the pandemic alone. Vanessa Unmuted centers on the types of incidents that are more commonly found in K-12 schools. It was developed in collaboration with the Los Angeles Unified School District Koreatown Pico-Union Community of Schools and the May 19 Project.

Stan Yogi, Writer
Stan Yogi is the co-author of the award-winning books Fred Korematsu Speaks Up and Wherever There’s a Fight: How Runaway Slaves, Suffragists, Immigrants, Strikers, and Poets Shaped Civil Liberties in California.

Chiae Byun-Kitayama, Ed.D., Educator
Chiae Byun-Kitayama is a Community of Schools Administrator for the Koreatown Pico-Union Community of Schools in Los Angeles Unified School District. She is an Adjunct Professor of Applied and Advanced Studies in Education at California State University,Los Angeles. She received her Master’s Degree in Education from Mount St. Mary’s College and her Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from University of Southern California.

Angel Trazo, M.A., Illustrator
Angel Trazo is a visual artist and Ph.D. student in Cultural Studies at UC Davis. She received her M.A. in Asian American Studies from UCLA. She is the author and illustrator of We Are Inspiring: The Stories of 32 Inspirational Asian American Women.

Joanne Luong, Researcher
Joanne Luong is an undergraduate student at UCLA pursuing a degree in Aerospace Engineering and a minor in Asian American Studies. She is involved in the Southeast Asian community at UCLA, having served as a coordinator for the Southeast Asian Admit Weekend and a board member of the Vietnamese Student Union.

Karen Umemoto, Ph.D., Project Facilitator
Karen Umemoto is the Helen and Morgan Chu Chair and Director of the UCLA Asian American Studies Center and Professor of Urban Planning and Asian American Studies. She received her Master’s degree in Asian American Studies from UCLA and her Ph.D. in Urban Studies from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
